Eleri Haf Williams

After recently gaining a Masters in Textile Culture from NUCA, and previously graduating in 2004 with a BA(hons) in Performance, Design & Production from the University of Leeds, Eleri specializes in the field of costume design and construction. Her passion lies within the genres of fantasy and sci-fi costumes, and aspires to work within the field of theatre/film in the future. As an artist/designer her aim is to generate pieces of costume inspired by a narrative, the fantasy world, or the natural world. Some re-occurring themes within her work are armoury, identity, colour symbolism, and duality. Work during the Masters course has helped Eleri to identify her own individual style of work, and to pinpoint what is important within the work. The work can combine traditional period fashions with elements of an imaginary world to create a character with a sense of ‘other-worldliness. Thus the costume itself becomes alive, portraying the character, with no need for a body to be present within it. To bring these costumes to life Eleri adopts many different ways of manipulating and experimenting with the fabrics and textiles used. The work itself may only be a part of the garment/armour, and can be presented either through photography or by installation. Previous work from the artist concentrated on the work of Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’. Fully aware that the subject had been approached numerous times in the past, Eleri put her own individual take on it by creating a piece of armour which suspended from the ceiling, creating a very dark and uncanny piece of costume which took on the form of a bat-like creature. The aim of the work was to put the audience member slightly on edge, to feel a sense of unease when visiting the work, which was achieved by isolating the work in a darkened room. By getting a reaction from the audience who view the work, Eleri knows that she has achieved in bringing her work to life.
